Virtual Lessons for Improving Academic Language for ELLs


This asynchronous two-hour professional development course will help educators facilitate academic language learning and practice for EL students via virtual lessons with the use of media tools and incorporating language acquisition research-based strategies. Participants will be provided examples of virtual primary and secondary lessons with demonstrations on using PowerPoint tools. In addition, rationale of specific EL considerations and scaffolds will be discussed throughout the presentation. This course is a fantastic opportunity to spark creative ways to support English Learners on a digital platform.

Joellia Pichardo is a bilingual educator for Tacoma Public Schools who specializes in teaching multilingual English Learners and students from marginalized communities. She has provided professional development courses focused on language acquisition, linguistic equity, culturally responsive instruction and social justice. She is committed to advocating equity and access for all students K-12 and beyond. She has a Bachelor’s degree in English as a Second Language from Inter American University of Puerto Rico and Master’s degree in Education from University of Washington.

 

Jamie Meidl has taught in Tacoma for over 15 years as an elementary classroom teacher, and then following her passion for working with English Learners, has taught ELL for the past 3 years at Arlington Elementary in Tacoma. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education, a Master’s Degree in English Language Learning, and is GLAD certified. This past spring, Jamie made it her mission to develop interactive, virtual lessons aimed at better meeting the needs of English Learners within the context of a distance learning model and worked to empower other teachers with the knowledge and confidence to do the same. In her free time, Jamie enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, 3 teenage children, and their lovable Chocolate Lab.
